Living in the Southwest: Torch Cactus

If it’s spring in Tucson, you will almost certainly stumble upon Torch Cacti. They sport some of the most beautiful flowers in the Sonoran Desert.

Torch Cacti are also known by their scientific name, Trichocereus hybrids. They produce very large, brightly-colored flowers that are truly magnificent to see.  All of these photos were taken in my neighborhood. There are three varieties: First Light, Epic, and Apricot Glow

You can read more about Torch cacti at the Desert Museum’s website and the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society website.

This torch cactus came into full bloom overnight and it was quite spectacular.

The next day, all the flowers were gone. Javelina, the local wild pigs, often come through our neighborhood at night and they ate all the flowers off the cactus! Talk about a clean sweep.

Living in the Southwest: While the Heat’s Away, the Animals Will Play

posted in: Entertainment, Home and Garden, Living in the Southwest, Nature, Photography | 0 | This post may contain referral links. See privacy policy for more.

Today’s post marks the start of a new series on this blog called Living in the Southwest. In this series i will be posting photos of the flora and fauna of the Sonoran Desert in Southern Arizona.

This post contains referral links. See privacy policy for more.

I will also be posting these photos for sale via Zazzle. You will be able to find these either in my Armadillo Amore website or Zazzle shop.

Spring is here and the desert is bustling with activity. Here in Southern Arizona, spring starts earlier than most of the rest of the country, but it ends sooner too. Today was the first day at 100° and there are plenty more sweltering, but dry days on the way.

Round-tailed Ground Squirrel

Where I live in Tucson, Round-tailed Ground Squirrels are quite common. Around here, people call ’em “potguts.” I caught this one peeking over my wall. They are pretty cute but I have had to put wire caging around one of my cacti after I caught one with a mouthful of my baby cactus in it’s mouth.

Also, they attract snakes who see the potguts as a tasty snack. So it is best to deter the adorable rodents from hanging around too close to your home; that is if you don’t want to also find rattlesnakes. YIKES!

potgut, round-tailed ground squirrel, tucson, arizona, sonoran desert potgut, round-tailed ground squirrel, tucson, arizona, sonoran desert

Desert Spiny Lizard

Desert Spiny Lizards are also pretty common where I live. These ectotherms enjoy sunbathing on my wall. They are fairly large, their body length alone can read to almost six inches, and kind of rotund.

These lizards have a big personality. If they feel threatened by you, they will most likely run away, but some like to stand their ground and try to intimidate you.

They do this by doing push ups and staring at you. Kind of macho! This always makes me laugh since I am a giant compared to them.

Gila Woodpecker

Gila Woodpeckers are kind of flighty birds, if you walk too close to their nest they will take off and then return when you are a safe distance away. They like to take up residence in saguaros where they create a hole large enough for their body to fit through.

The inside of the saguaro has ribs that serve as a support system for a green fleshy exterior. When the woodpecker damages the flesh to make a nest the saguaro it forms a walled off space inside to protect itself (aka scar tissue) and thus becomes the perfect nesting site for the woodpecker. Read more at Nature.com.

Gila woodpeckers are very recognizable with the brilliant red spot on top of their head and their back feathers are black and white spotted.

Northern Cardinal

This is a male cardinal that I spotted singing to its mate one morning. Male cardinals are brightly colored whereas the females are a more drab gray color.

The red makes it very easy to spot in the desert environment since it is a palette of greens and browns.

cardinal, tucson, arizona, sonoran desert

Costa’s Hummingbird

Southern Arizona has several varieties of hummingbirds that call the desert home. This is a Costa’s Hummingbird drinking some nectar from a variety of aloe vera.

Their wings move so quickly that you can literally hear them humming around and that is how I caught this picture. I heard one nearby and turned around just in time to catch him grabbing a snack.

hummingbird, tucson, arizona, sonoran desert

Anna’s Hummingbird

I have a hummingbird feeder in my backyard so I can enjoy seeing the hummingbirds throughout the day. This one is an Anna’s Hummingbird that stopped to drink some of my sugar water.

My house back’s a wash (a dry river bed that only flows during the heavy summer rains – aka monsoon season) and several hummingbirds hang out in the trees there.

Sometimes there can be two hummingbirds dive bombing each other and chasing each other around because they don’t want the other one to drink from the feeder.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I will have the high quality version of these images for sale on Zazzle within the week.

They are organized by Zodiac Sign, but we are all more than our sun sign*, so feel free to buy her any gift from the 36 handpicked gift ideas below.

The Scorpio Mom can get a little intense, but only because she is passionate about her projects. Once she gets focused on something, nothing will stop her, just like Scorpio’s opposite: Taurus. Help her relax and get in touch with her earthy roots with a gardening kit. She will love it because this hobby is not pointless, it yields actual results! Capricorn Moms include Michelle Obama, Zooey Deschanel, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

air sign, horoscope, zodiac sign, symbol

The Aquarius Mom is unique. She has a certain “je ne sais quoi.” She embraces her quirks more than other moms. Aquarians are known for their humanitarian streak, and are often very in touch with their spiritual side. She will appreciate a mindful gift such as a Tibetan Singing Bowl. Some altruistic Aquarius Moms include Shakira, Yoko Ono, and Mariska Hargitay.

water sign, horoscope, zodiac sign, symbol

The Pisces Mom is a generous and giving soul. She is likely to be a bit of a people pleaser who struggles to say the word, “No.” She is sensitive to the needs of her children and works hard to please. She goes with the flow so much that she makes little time for herself. Some patient Pisces Moms include Drew Barrymore, Rachel Weisz, and Carrie Underwood.

Nature Notes: Hummingbird and Frost

Nature Notes: Hummingbird and Frost

Hummingbirds are one of my all-time favorite animals.

Over the past year and a half, thanks to my regularly refilling of the hummingbird feeder, they like me too, treating me to frequent visits to the backyard.

This may not be surprising because according to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, hummingbirds of both genders are highly territorial.

Winter may be cold, but the hummers are still out and about, protecting their little corners of the desert.

Yesterday, I walked out into the backyard and found this one in the mesquite tree.

hummingbird, winter, december, nature

A striking profile, wouldn’t you say?

hummingbird, winter, december, nature

They are always on the lookout, almost like owls with their heads on swivels. Looks a bit cold – all puffed up!

hummingbird, winter, december, nature

I believe this is a Costa’s hummingbird, given its squat proportions.

hummingbird, winter, december, nature

This is likely an immature male from looking at the chin. You can see his adult feathers are beginning to grow in.

Here is what an adult Costa’s male looks like:

I can see you!

Our photoshoot ended when the young hummer dived after another hummingbird who was audacious enough to enter his territory.

Did you know that hummingbirds can clock speeds of over 60 mph during their dives!

(Source: Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum)

With the hummer gone, I turned my Sony a390 (previously blogged about here) to my wintry garden.

My Gomphrena globosa (globe amaranth) and Gazania look quite poetic covered in frost.

Lantana looking frosty! Brrr…

Frost-covered rosemary embodies the spirit of December, doesn’t it?

5 Fantastic Features of the Sony Alpha a6000

5 Fantastic Features of the Sony Alpha a6000

posted in: Entertainment, Gift Ideas, Home and Garden, Photography | 1 | This post may contain referral links. See privacy policy for more.

The Sony a6000 is a top gift this year. I discovered it by accident last week at Best Buy and was pleasantly surprised.

I currently have a Sony Alpha a390 dSLR camera. Isn’t she a beaut?

sony a390 - 1

I’ve been pleased with it, but I have often found my mind drifting down the road not travelled (i.e. getting a Canon or a Nikon.) I wondered if my pictures might be better if I had one of the two “main” brands.

So when I went looking for a new camera, I was quite sure I did NOT want a Sony. I went to Best Buy to see some of the cameras in person that I had been researching online. I had whittled down my choice to two cameras, either the Canon EOS Rebel T5 or the Nikon D3300, CNET’S “Best dSLR under $500.” The Canon T5 has 18 megapixels. The Nikon D3300 boasts a whopping 24.2 megapixels.

I had really good vibes about the Nikon until I started talking to the “Sony Expert” in the store.

Argh! I thought. I’m trying to get away from you Sony! Just get off my back already.

I had not included Sony in my research so of course I knew nothing about the mirrorless wonder I was about to be introduced to. It helped that the associate actually had his personal a6000 on his person. He clearly loved the product and showed me lots of pictures of his cute little pug on it.

Well played, sir.

So without further ado, I present:

Five Fantastic Features about the Sony a6000:

1. Lightweight

Because it is mirrorless, the body of the camera only weighs 10.5 oz!

I just weighed my a390 on my kitchen scale and the body alone weighs 1 lb 4 ounces (i.e. 20 oz). That thing does get heavy on a trip to the zoo.

2. Tiltable LCD screen

I have a similiar feature on my a390. It comes in handy when you need to take a photo up high or down low.

3. Wi-fi enabled

Two key benefits. First, you can use your phone as a remote. Second, you can send photos to your phone from the camera.

When I heard the second benefit of wi-fi, it was like angels coming down from heaven singing, “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!” Or like this wonderful Taraji P Henson gif:

This feature is perfect for posting pics from your fancy camera straight to Instagram on your phone without having to transfer them and all that jazz. Ama-zing!!! This is so practical!

4. Electronic view finder

When it’s too sunny to see your LCD screen, you can look through the eye piece to review your photos. This is another byproduct of the camera being mirrorless. So cool!

5. 24.3 effective megapixels

My a390 only has 14.2 MP, so 24.3 is quite a step up. More MPs = clearer, crisper pictures.

You can read more about the Sony a6000 on Sony’s website here.

**UPDATE: June 30, 2016**

So we did end up getting this for Christmas and have had it for 6 months. It is an AMAZING camera- super lightweight, amazing photos, and the electronic view finder performs great in bright conditions.

We highly recommend going mirrorless.

Picturesque Printables

I found some gorgeous (FREE) printables on Pinterest last week and used them to make my mom’s Mother’s Day extra special.
Even though Mother’s Day is over, these three printables are useful for any gifting or crafting occasion!
Here they are:

1. Paper Gem Templates from Minieco

picturesque printables

I discovered this lovely geometric gem template on Minieco.co.uk, one of my new favorite craft websites. The gem pictured above is Gem B on the Minieco website.
I used regular letter sized printer paper, but card stock would probably be better if you want them to last.

2. Martha Stewart Floral Wrapping Paper

You may have noticed the fetching design of the wrapping of the above gem. It’s yet another wonder brought to us by Martha.
Martha offers some gorgeous printable Gift Wrap, which you can find here (for FREE!!!).
Geraniums is featured above and Berries is featured below. Other patterns include Lemons, Oranges, Leaves, and Mixed Flowers.

3. Matryoshka Dolls from Today’s Creative Life

Who doesn’t love Russian Nesting Dolls? They are always on point.
I used mine as decorative gift tags, but there are many more innovate ideas on Today’s Creative Life.
There are nine blank on one page and nine with Mother’s Day messages on another page.

The Enchanted Paper

Fifteen more minutes until the bell,

What shall we do after show and tell?

In a folder, lies an old worksheet,

Maybe we can fold and pleat

To make the paper into something more:

An agile airplane that will soar.

Like the birds that fly above

Like an eagle or a dove

To take us off the ground in flight

A nine year old becomes a Brother, Wright.
